A side(street) order of chips, please…

5 Feb

Google launched it’s street view service in Belgium a few months back, which is pleasing enough in itself. However, they’ve gone one step further and added a cone of frites/chips/fries to the little search dude.

I can’t even begin to tell you how happy this makes me. Google = honorary Belgians.

A Room with a View

24 Jan

We live on the fourth (and final) floor.  While this means that we have a ridiculous amount of stairs to climb to get home, it also means that we have a rather good view. In case you were a little confused, I added the letters on myself. Brussels does not provide the world with a handy marker system of letter shaped, helium filled balloons above the points of interest. These are three of the top 15 tallest buildings in Brussels (and some cranes).

The view I wake up to every day!

A – Palais de Justice. On a (rare) clear day the view from outside here is even better than the view from our flat – to the north you can see the whole of Brussels laid out before you.

Imagine how nice this will look without the scaffolding

The scaffolding’s been there since 1989.  It’s now so old that it needs to be renovated itself, before they can do any more work on the building.  The idea was that this would take about a year, then they could finish everything else off in about three months.  That was at least 18 months ago.  I’m going to assume that it will be covered up for as long as I live here.

B – The Hilton. The less said the better really. It ruins my view.

C – I believe this is the Finance Tower. Again, I have nothing interesting to tell you.

D – Here are some cranes. These pop up all over Brussels. We had to climb across the base of one recently to get down a street; it could have been one of these two. Sometimes they spin round but not often – I think that would indicate that some work is being done.

From our terrace at the back we can just about see the top of St Gilles town hall but it is hidden by a big tree and doesn’t really show up in pictures.  Yes, even when you’re… ahem… as clearly skilled with a camera as I am!
